Ok, so here is what I think... I think the Lord allows us to sometimes see how big the trial is in front of us (the REALLY big mountain) to see just how big, magnificent, and grand He is. He allows us to take in the vastness of the mountain to then see how even greater He is.
After we have taken in the vastness of the mountain, we are then at the fork in the road. We have two choices.
Our first choice is to say, "Lord there is no way I will make it over that mountain without you. I will cling to you and trust you. I fill follow you wherever you lead and trust You wherever you take me. I put my life in Your hands and know that You know what is best for me. There is no mountain You can't climb for You made the mountain. That mountain is big, but you are bigger. I choose to take each step towards that mountain, slowly climbing it, knowing that you are carrying me every step of the way and will never let me fall.”
Our second choice is to say, “Lord, that mountain is bigger than you. I don’t think you can handle it. I know you made the mountains, but I really think that this one has become bigger than you. I am not sure that you can get me over that mountain. You might drop me. I don’t think I can trust you with my life. You don’t know what is best. I don’t think you realize how big that mountain is. I think I will sit here for a while and wait. Maybe it will get smaller. Maybe it will go away. I don’t think you realize how heavy my bags are already and you want me to climb that mountain? I don't think so...
I know some of you are wondering if I have been struck by lighting yet for writing the second response. If I am honest I would have to say that recently I have given that response to God in part regarding some of my trials. If you asked me what response I thought I was giving I would say I was giving the first response, but my actions showed I was giving the second response. I have been in unbelief at times.
Again, thanks to my mom and good friends I have been redirected to see where I was on the wrong path. If you are in a trial and don’t have good friends or family to get you on the right path, please, please seek out a good local church to help you. You won’t be able to run this race without the help of others.
I can say that typing this out has helped me. To see my response in black in white is just pure foolishness and sin. I choose to have the first response. For I know that He is good and any other response is just plain craziness and of course sin.
I am reminded of God’s response to Job… I am humbled after reading what the Lord says to Job. Who am I to question God? Who am I to think my ways are better than His ways? Lord, no matter how big that mountain is, I will trust in you for you are FAR bigger. The earth is your footstool. Ok, You are REALLY big. I can trust you with anything that comes my way.
Lord thank you for being patient and longsuffering with me.
Job 38:4-41:
"Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand.
Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it?
On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone-
While the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?
"Who shut up the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb,
When I made the clouds its garment and wrapped it in thick darkness,
When I fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place,
When I said, 'This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt'?
"Have you ever given orders to the morning, or shown the dawn its place,
That it might take the earth by the edges and shake the wicked out of it?
The earth takes shape like clay under a seal; its features stand out like those of a garment.
The wicked are denied their light, and their upraised arm is broken.
"Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep?
Have the gates of death been shown to you? Have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?
Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth? Tell me, if you know all this.
"What is the way to the abode of light? And where does darkness reside?
Can you take them to their places? Do you know the paths to their dwellings?
Surely you know, for you were already born! You have lived so many years!
"Have you entered the storehouses of the snow or seen the storehouses of the hail,
Which I reserve for times of trouble, for days of war and battle?
What is the way to the place where the lightning is dispersed, or the place where the east winds are scattered over the earth?
Who cuts a channel for the torrents of rain, and a path for the thunderstorm,
To water a land where no man lives, a desert with no one in it,
To satisfy a desolate wasteland and make it sprout with grass?
Does the rain have a father? Who fathers the drops of dew?
From whose womb comes the ice? Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens
When the waters become hard as stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen?
"Can you bind the beautiful Pleiades? Can you loose the cords of Orion?
Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons or lead out the Bear with its cubs?
Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you set up God's dominion over the earth?
"Can you raise your voice to the clouds and cover yourself with a flood of water?
Do you send the lightning bolts on their way? Do they report to you, 'Here we are'?
Who endowed the heart with wisdom or gave understanding to the mind?
Who has the wisdom to count the clouds? Who can tip over the water jars of the heavens
When the dust becomes hard and the clods of earth stick together?
"Do you hunt the prey for the lioness and satisfy the hunger of the lions
When they crouch in their dens or lie in wait in a thicket?
Who provides food for the raven when its young cry out to God and wander about for lack of food?

This is EXACTLY what the Lord showed me while I was under anesthesia for a D&C. There was a huge mountain in front of me as I stood a ways off. But the closer I got to it, the closer I got to Jesus who was WAY bigger. Yes, footstool would be a great comparison.
This picture has carried me thru many "what now, God?" situations that SEEM way too big.
One of these days Zoanna when I am out your way I will have to visit you... I would love to meet you face to face.
